BPW Ireland Website
BPW (Business and Professional Women) is an International Organisation with over 30,000 members, dedicated to the empowerment of Women. In its 90-year history, BPW has advocated for equal status for Women in power and decision-making roles. Ireland is proud to be a BPW Member for over 60 years.
The history of BPW lies in women entering the workforce in significant numbers during World War 1. It became clear that women needed a voice and BPW initially helped to organise women across the United States to press for better and equal conditions as well as respect for their contribution to the Economy. The first International BPW Meeting took place in Geneva in 1930 and the work of improving conditions for women and girls has continued since and is now world-wide.
At the heart of the wider BPW is each BPW Club, which aims to provide a warm gathering for business and professional women to forge friendships; develop professionally; and influence the agenda of the wider BPW.
We call this to share, educate and give a voice to women.
In Ireland, we have three main Clubs and a number of affiliates:
We are also part of the wider BPW:
Our Region is Europe - https://www.bpw-europe.org, which is part of
BPW International -
At Irish, European and International level, BPW works with Governments and NGOs throughout the world to achieve legal and systemic change which addresses issues of discrimination against women. Together, we have significant leverage including consultative status with the Council of Europe and the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Although each Club is relatively small, our combined voices and our long history of advocacy for women, gives us real power to make a difference.

National President BPW Ireland
I want to send my very best wishes to all our Members in BPW Ireland; and on behalf of BPW Ireland, to all of our many Members throughout the World at this time of crisis. As an organisation, we are ever bound by our fellowship and shared aspirations, but none more so than at this time of real danger due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. We are joined in our mutual fight against this disease, by staying home, and particularly, by our mutual hope for the safety of each and every one of the BPW family worldwide.
I joined BPW in a time when we were just embracing e-mail as a fantastic new method of communicating and we thought ourselves so modern and progressive!
When I look at how we are now embracing all manner of modern communication and how easily we have adapted to Skype, Zoom and Facetime, I am as always impressed by the boundless Girl Power that exists within our Clubs. It will take more than a pandemic to quench the will of BPW to support each other and seek ways to communicate and uplift each other and our wider communities. I am reminded that the birth of BPW was from the involvement of significant numbers of women into the workforce for the first time during World War I. That was a different war, but we have the same positive response now, albeit against a very different enemy.
At a time when we need to be close; but to stay apart, I have no doubt that the power of BPW will guide us to share, educate and give a voice to women in our homes, our communities, our Countries and worldwide. Not for the first time in my life, I am thankful for my BPW family and I wish us all health, happiness and a safe path through these troubled waters.
A word from our favourite poet, Seamus Heaney,
“If we winter this one out, we can summer anywhere”
